YKH Consulting served as the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering team for the replacement of the Houma Generating Station (HGS), which suffered extensive damage from Category 4 Hurricane Ida in August 2021. Following the catastrophic impact that left the 80.6 MW facility nonoperational due to severe water damage to critical electrical distribution equipment, YKH developed a comprehensive replacement solution utilizing eighteen 4.4 MW Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (RICE) natural gas generators. This innovative approach will deliver approximately 79.2 MW of total generating capacity, nearly matching the original facility's output while modernizing the power generation infrastructure. The engineering team's design addresses the vulnerabilities exposed by Hurricane Ida, where the original steam turbine units and their associated electrical systems were compromised by wind-driven rain and flooding, ensuring a more resilient power generation solution for the Terrebonne Parish community.
